Samsarah Works with Community Clothes Closet to Lend a Hand
As a team, Samsarah´s 2009 goal was to find a project that allowed us to give back to our community in a way that was direct, immediate, and meaningful. We chose to work with the Community Clothes Closet and had no idea how huge an impact this effort would have on us, at Samsarah.
In the Fox Valley, the Community Clothes Closet is a shining example of the power of giving. The Community Clothes Closet, in Menasha, describes their mission as "camouflaging poverty" by making quality clothing available to people in need. The philosophy is simple: when you look good, you feel good. To relate to this sentiment, all one needs to do is remember the feeling of your last "bad hair day" or the last spilled coffee that landed on your shirt in public. When you feel good, it’s easier to make other good things happen. Beyond the simple act of giving, a positive cycle is set in motion.
With the help of the Community Clothes Closet, kids don’t have to go to school in tattered looking clothing and parents can go to work looking sharp and in style. Families in need can use the money saved on clothing to spend on other basic needs of life. It´s a win-win situation.
The Community Clothes Closet has several creative programs to help those in need. Especially relevant in this economy is the "New Start Boutique" designed to help those

searching for work by providing
a professional looking outfit to help make a great first impression at an interview. This program inspired Samsarah Salon to collaborate with the CCC by providing clients of the New Start Boutique with a free haircut and style, or other service to help prepare them for a job search.
Sarah, our owner shares, "The response we´ve received from Community Clothes Closet referrals has just knocked us over. To be able to look into the eyes of the people we are helping has been very powerful. Everyone of us at Samsarah has been positively impacted and will never forget these clients."
Many CCC clients have generously written us with updates, letting us know that they landed the job. "It´s provided a valuable reminder of why we each chose to be in the beauty and spa industry."
The work that the Community Clothes Closet is doing is heart-warming and inspiring. Having the opportunity to work with CCC clients and build on their efforts is as big a gift to all of as at Samsarah as it is to anyone we may be able to help. What is Ear Candling?
Ear candling (also known as coning or ear funneling) is not a new therapy, but was practiced for centuries as a folk remedy to improve clarity and focus. The process was all but lost to common knowledge for many years but has come into practice again as a method to relieve pressure in the ear canal and other discomforts related to the ears.
As more people are seeking alternative to digging in the ears with Q-tips, ear candling is a natural, non-intrusive procedure that may help alleviate the painful effects of many conditions.
What are the benefits?
Many people attest to the value of ear candling as a means of cleansing the ear canals and sinus passages. Other reported benefits include improved hearing, safe removal of excess wax, improved balance and equilibrium, help in reducing ringing and itching in the ear, a reduction in ear aches and infections, and fewer ear-related headaches.
Beyond the physical benefits ear candling functions as an energetic modality comparable to the fields of reflexology and acupuncture. Fans of ear candling report a feeling of spiritual opening and emotional clearing, and cleansing of subtle energy flows. Recipients find the process relaxing and soothing which enables and encourages healing.
What happens during a candling session?
Throughout history, the process of ear candling has changed very little. The session begins with a hollow candle that’s made of unbleached muslin that has been shaped into a cone using beeswax or paraffin. Some ear candles are dipped in aromatic or essential oils. The long tapered candles (nine to twelve inches) are gently inserted into the ear, then lit. The practitioner monitors the candle, trimming off the ash and maintaining proper positioning. The candle takes about ten minutes to burn and often two candles per ear are used in a session. Sessions are approximately one hour.

Through a process called convection softer waxes and toxins will be drawn out of the ear, oxidized and turned into vapors during the procedure. On an energetic level, ear candling strengthens and purifies the energy field of our body. Each treatment builds on the previous treatment creating a sense of balance.
On the receiving end, most people experience a gentle warmth in the ear canal which has a soothing relaxing effect. There is a slight crackling sound as the candle burns.
Sessions are concluded by swabbing the ear with cotton dipped in oil to soothe the nerve endings and protect ears from wind (if one will be outdoors). You may for a short time feel a bit of pressure in your ears following a session. This is normal. It is recommended you not fly or get fluid in your ears for 24 hours after a session.
Ear candling is considered appropriate for most people, including children. It can benefit those who work outdoors or in dusty environments, participate in water activities, have chronic ear aches, have allergies, feel blockage in the ears or have sinus infections. It is not recommended if one has had recent ear surgery, cysts in the ear, acute mastoiditis, ear drains, ear injury, damage to ear drum, artificial ear drums or tumors of the ear. Of course, while many have found ear candling safe and effective, as well as meditative, it should not replace medical treatment.

Why should you treat yourself to regular facials?
